26th January 1950 was the date when India became a democratic republic. It was the day when the constitution of the largest democracy of the world came into effect, replacing the Government of India act. Every year Republic Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm in the national capital.
A Republic Day parade is organised by the Ministry of Defence with active army personnel on Rajpath (formerly known as Kingsway) and every year a head of state or famous statesmen from a foreign country visits the nation as the chief guest on the occasion of Republic Day. 150th birth anniversary of the “Father of the Nation”
Republic Day 2019 is very special as the year 2019 marks the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and around 17 tableaux from various states and union territories and 6 from various ministries will be displayed in the parade on the theme “Gandhi”.
Inauguration of ‘National War Memorial’
The prime minister of India will inaugurate the ‘National War Memorial’ on Republic Day in honour of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives. Indian Air Force will also carry out a special display.
Women leaders in the parade for the first time
First time in history a woman officer will lead the Army Services Corps in the Republic Day parade. A woman officer will also be included in The Daredevils Motorcycle Team. It will also be the first time in history that all women contingent of Assam Rifles will take part in the Republic Day parade this year. So this year literally about women power.
Soldiers of ‘Azad Hind Fauz’ will take part in the parade
Republic day parade 2019 will be the first time in history of independent India to witness 4 veteran soldiers, of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s ‘Azad Hind Fauz’ aged above 90 years to take part in the celebrated parade alongside the young jawans of today’s independent Indian armed forces.
Spiritual touch in the republic day parade 2019
This year will also be a witness to a tableau will also showcase ‘Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth’, a historical educational institution in Varanasi at the Rajpath parade. The said tableau will display the glory of Ghats, rituals, ancient temples and Buddhist Monks of Varanasi.
President of South Africa will be present as the chief guest
Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa, the fifth and current President of South Africa, will be the Chief Guest on 70th Republic Day of India 2019. President Ramaphosa was invited by the Hon'ble prime minister of India Sri Narendra Modi during the G20 summit which was held in Buenos Aires. He was specially chosen for the special occasion of 2019 as India is celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi, who had a very close emotional connection with the people of South Africa. Prime Minister Modi has said that the visit of the South African President to India will help to strengthen the ties between the two friendly countries.
