The Golden Globe Awards held annually is yet another scintillating award ceremony following behind the eminent Oscar and Grammy Awards.

Honoring the best of minds and actors from the film and television industry, it is an influential award function bestowing both honor and fame upon its recipients. Beverly Hills in California witnessed the 76th Golden Globe Awards on 6th January 2019.


Bryan Singer’s Bohemian Rhapsody was indeed a well-adapted film about the British rock band Queen and bagged the Best Motion Picture Award this year with Rami Malek receiving the Best Actor’s Award for his brilliant performance.

The 2018 American biographical comedy Vice had a remarkable performance by Christian Bale in the role of the 46th Vice President of America, Dick Cheney which fetched him the award for the Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.

As Best Actresses this year, we have Glenn Close for her acting in The Wife which makes her the three times recipient of the award and according to New York Times leaves Lady Gaga disappointed as her role in A Star is Born was also highly appreciable.

As Queen Anne in The Favourite, Olivia Colman is another recipient of the Best Actress Award in the musical or comedy genre.

The best animated picture was triumphantly declared as the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse with its motivating message being: “Anyone can wear the mask; everyone is powerful and everyone is necessary…” says Director Peter Ramsey.

Perhaps, receiving three awards made the 1960s comic drama Green Book, the biggest winner of the ceremony as it went onto be the Best Motion Picture- Musical or Comedy alongside having the Best Screenplay and the Best Supporting Role played by Mahershala Ali.

Promising towards a systematic change in not only Hollywood but even beyond, Regina King received her award as the Best Supporting Actress in the film If Beale Street Could Talk marking it as her first win at the award occasion.

The semi-autobiographical film Roma set in Mexico got Alfonso Cuaron, the Best Director’s Award and was also chosen as the Best Film in Foreign Language. The film despite being a fascinating one was not chosen as the Best Motion Picture only because it was not made in the English Language.

Lady Gaga’s disappointment however turned into an exaltation as her song “Shallow” from the film A Star Is Born along with Bradley Cooper won the Best Original Song award.

Amongst the television series The Americans won The Best Series: Drama and in the musical or comedy genre, the best series is The Kominsky Method.

For Rachel Brosnahan, Michael Douglas, Richard Madden, Darren Criss, Patricia Arquette, Ben Wishaw, Patricia Clarkson it was an evening of sheer achievement as they received their respective accolades in the different television series category.

With actors Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg hosting the show and initiating cheer in the air, the 76th Golden Globe also had the veteran American actor Jeff Bridges being honored for his lifetime contribution and his achievements. While Roma, Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody won many awards, there were other impressive nominated films like Black Panther, Blackkklansman, Mary Poppins Returns. As it unfurled the essence of jubilation on many hooked onto their television screens across worldwide, it did leave some with a tinge of despair while others geared themselves up for a more promising and eventful year of performances that lay ahead.
