We all want success in life; we all want to be somewhere. But are we following the path that will lead us to our goals?


Just having a career of your dreams is not enough in this fast-paced world, you must work towards growth and career development to stay relevant in the race and achieve greater success.


If you want to apply for a job of your dreams or want to acquire more knowledge to excel at your career pursuits you must understand and set SMART goals which will help you achieve your goals in a measurable and timely manner.


Having SMART goals can give you an edge with them;


Specific: Your goal should be specific! Set a destination you want to be and make as many plans to achieve it, but never change your goal because you cant.


Remember your plan B should always be to make your plan A work, and not to pursue something entirely different because you failed.


Nothing in this world worth having is a piece of cake, and you shouldn't expect it to be. So be specific about what you want, and how you want it.


Measurable: Another thing your goal needs to be is measurable, to know how far you’ve come and how much is left to go. Having measurable goals will help you keep track of the progress.


There should be a degree to measure it, to know you’ve achieved them. For example; if you’re trying to change careers from a developer to a data scientist your goal can be being a data scientist and you can measure it in the form of your learning.


Achievable: Just having a specific goal is not enough to achieve it, it must actually be achievable.


For example, you have a goal to “learn java in a weekend”, though it can be a proper goal no one can learn the language in a weekend so the issue is, it’s not achievable. Or you set a goal to build a robot this month but some critical components that you imported from Germany will get delivered to you in 45 days.


You must have a complete understanding of achievability of the goal, understand the constraints, what you’ll need, how you’ll get it done.




The goal should be relevant to you; it must fulfill your career growth, or align with your career and needs to realistic.


If your goal is to be the best dragon trainer out there, you understood what’s wrong with it. If still, you’re delusional; they don’t exist.


Your goal must be something concrete, achievability is not even a factor here. First of all, your goal must be able to be a goal.

Though you have a goal and a plan to execute but by when the goal needs to be achieved to make it measurable.


A must and must always be time-bound, once you’ve identified all the facets of the plan, resources required, constraints, etc. you must define a timeline based on these factors by which the goal must have been achieved.


Identifying a point of time by which a task must be complete, is crucial especially with long term goals when it’s so easy to lose track of progress.
