Are you normal?
This seems like an easy question for most, but our grip on reality can be thinner and more tenuous than you think! This shouldn’t be surprising, since everything that you are- your hopes, your dreams, your memories- is contained in one small, fragile entity we like to call our “brain”. The brain is just an organ after all, and things sometimes go wrong with it. Unlike a wonky liver, however, a malfunctioning brain tends to yield some really bizarre consequences, and you’re left with a disorder so strange that you get written up in articles such as this! Here is a list of 5 neurological disorders so bizarre, they will chill your bones. Read this list at your own peril.
1. Cotard’s Syndrome
Starting this list off this this incredible ghastly disorder known as ‘Cotard’s Syndrome’. Believe it or not, victims of this disorder have an unwavering belief that they are dead! Yes, you read that correct. People with this disease think that they have no blood, or any other internal organs and would go as far as to starve themselves to death since they believe that the dead require no food.
2. Fregoli’s Delusion
Discovered in 1927, patients with this curious disorder believe that all the people around them are actually just one person draped in different disguises. Fregoli’s Delusion was also the theme of a SpongeBob SquarePants episode once, where Sandy was convinced that everyone she met was just Patrick in disguise.
3. Hemispatial Neglect
What would it feel like to only perceive one half of the world around you?
People with this neurological condition show a deficit in attention to and awareness of one side of the field of vision. The patient may not eat half the food on their plate despite still being hungry, draw a clock face showing only the numbers 12-6, and even fail to shave half their face! And why? Because they just aren’t able to perceive the rest of the image.
4. Alien Hand Syndrome
What do you do, when you own hand tries to kill you?
Patients with this mystifying disorder showcase a “rogue” hand, which seems to have a mind of its own. These ‘alien hands’ can perform complex task without the person even realizing! A patient by the name of Karen Byrne noticed her left hand undoing buttons, writing, sketching- and yes, on occasion even strangling her in her sleep without her knowledge or control.
And last but not the least is Prosopagnosia- a condition wherein a person loses the ability to recognize faces including his own, while having all other aspects of his vision intact! Patients with this disorder need clues to recognize people such as specific clothing or jewellery as their ability to perceive a face is impaired.
And so there you have it!
Some of the strangest disorders that exist. But rest easy, as these neurological conditions are highly rare and the usually manifest after an injury to the head.
