1. It (2017)

A supernatural horror film, this one is based on a novel of the same name by Stephen King, published back in 1986. A Popular Critics Choice, this movie had grossed $700 million worldwide post its release and is rated 7.5/10 on IMDb. The story is about a few kids who form a group to fight a monster which is disguised as a clown, lives in the sewer, and kills children from their town.

2. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

With its unique concept whereby four teenagers are hunted down in their dreams by a cruel killer when they sleep, this film was a slasher story about the survivor’s quest to find the truth. Rated 7.5/10 on IMDb the movie grossed over $25 million at the US box office and received rave critical reviews, making a significant impact on the horror genre.

3. The Exorcist (1973)

The Exorcist was a supernatural horror flick adapted from a bestselling novel of the same name by William Peter Blatty. The story revolves around a 12-year-old girl’s possession by Satan and her mother’s determination to win her back by exorcism performed by priests. It rates 8 on IMDb and was based on the real-life exorcism of Ronald Doe, a boy anonymously named by the Roman Catholic Church priests.

4. The Evil Dead (1981)

This film is about 5 friends who vacation at an isolated cabin in a remote wood and accidentally release the spirits of demons and become possessed by them. What follows is mayhem - with the spirits wreaking havoc.  The Evil Dead is rated 7.5 on IMDb and was a low budget film which has evolved in reputation with time to have become the greatest horror film of all times, achieving a cult status. The film also generated a franchise involving two sequels and TV series along with video games and comic books.

5. The Omen (1976)

Rated 7.6 on IMDB, this movie saw the handsome Gregory Peck portraying the character of an American ambassador and a family-loving man. Mysterious deaths and tragedies lead him to find out that the son he is raising is none other than the Devil’s own son. The film was very successful commercially and received good critic reviews, becoming the highest grossing movie of 1976 churning $60 million at the box office.  

6. The Conjuring (2013)

A spooky one from the Conjuring series, this film is about Ed and Lorraine Warren who are paranormal investigators, and their real-life cases of dealing with the haunting. The investigating couple comes to the rescue of a Rhode Island family who are experiencing disturbing events at their farmhouse. The movie is rated 7.5 on IMDb and received positive reviews from critics. It is one of the highest-grossing horror films of Hollywood, churning $319 million worldwide against its $20 million budget.
